Pros: I love that the popular girls are not stereotypical mean girls -- what a nice change, and true to my own experience. The girls at the top have enough confidence and charisma to maintain their status without cruelty and shunning; the mean girl is the girl trying to claw her way in. Isn't that so often the case? I also liked that Wilma's unpopularity was explained -- sometimes, being unpopular is purely a matter of bad luck. She was made vulnerable when her two friends moved, leaving her isolated, and from there all it took was the one humiliating essay incident to seal her status. That, to me, is also very realistic, and the author did a great job of portraying the pain of her position.

Cons: I liked Wilma well enough, but not quite enough to feel truly vested. She lacked charm, somehow, and her obsession with dogs, which should have made me like her more, got to be annoying. I also didn't feel the chemistry between her and unibrow-dude, so that when they had that hour-long makeout session, it felt squicky rather than thrilling. She described both of them in such unattractive terms (her with huge buckteeth and no neck, him with the giant forehead and unibrow) that I had a hard time picturing him attracted to her, or vise versa.

I did like this book overall and and am not NOT recommending it, but somehow for a book based on a magic wish, I felt a certain lack of magic.

Got the book for my daughter as a gift because she really likes this author. She always reads the books right away!
Good book!
I usually love this author but while this book was good, it wasn't super great.
A book intended for middle-school girls, but fairly shallow ones. Should we really write about middle-school girls who think popularity and boyfriends and kissing are the most important things in the world?

A bit magical, as most of Levine's books are, this one is about an unpopular girl who has a wish granted by a fairy. Her wish -- to be the most popular girl in her middle school -- inevitably comes to an end when middle school ends, and she must go to high school. Will she still have friends? Will she still keep her boyfriend who kisses her on every street corner? Will she learn that she is a good person whether she is popular or not? A rather hackneyed plot, and not anywhere near as good a book as Ella Enchanted, or many of Gail Carson Levine's other books.
Got a reluctant (12 year old girl) reader hooked. She enjoyed the premise very much, and she found the protagonist relatable, but warned me it has quite a bit about kissing. Still, I felt comfortable adding it to my classroom library. Its reasonable length made it popular among my less than enthusiastic gals, and it was worth AR points.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 8-year-old cousin. I am on a mission to try and instill the love of books into my younger cousins. I believe it’ll be a good foundation for their education, down the line. I took a quick glance through it but didn’t finish reading. She didn’t mention much beyond that it was fun to read. I suppose that is a good thing. I do love Gail Carson Levine, though, so I have faith this is a good choice for young readers!
