A Promise for Breanna Angel of Mercy Series #1 Al Lacy 9780880707978 Books Reviews
This book is almost a thriller with the realism of a wagon train heading west. It spares none of the disappointments and fears, but also shares the promise of the Gospel and victory by faith. It was hard to put this "page-turner" down! (I might mention that the recurring thought/dream of Breanna's reunion with John Stranger was difficult to follow at first, but don't let that stop you!)
I have not read this book, but I have read the Journeys of the Stranger series. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents to those who are confused by the John Stranger Character. It seems that this series actually starts with Journeys of the Stranger, Legacy. Then, it splits, with Journeys following John Stranger, and Mercy following Brianna Baylor. There are times in the Journeys series where Brianna makes an appearance, so I assume the same for Mercy. Also, one of the Journey's books makes reference to the event of Brianna's "X" stalking her on a wagon train. It sums up the story in about a page, and I'm assuming it is referring to the story in this book. There was another such reference to another "happening" that was summed up in one of the Journey's books, which, I assume happens in one of the other Mercy books. The Journey's books are excellent, and so I bet these are too. Much fun to read and very interesting. Will likely read these (Mercy) when I'm finished with those (Journey). Enjoy!
Update, I have read what I believed were the first 4 books in the series. I'll get to that. Anyway, yes, the story jumps back and fourth between this series and Journeys of the Stranger. Both series are excellent. Now, here's something strange. The church library had 4 of these books, labeled on their cover 1,2 3 and 4. It was a little confusing as they referenced things that were never told about in previous books... I just now found out that this numbering is all screwed up. These books were actually 1, 4, 6 and 8. What's up with that??? The numbers were top center of the cover, just as they appear on the books on this site. Maybe these books are worth "100 Meeellion Dollars" because the numbers on their covers are wrong. haha. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go out of order.
After working in a small, frontier town as the only medical staff, Breanna finds herself a traveler on a wagon train heading towards San Francisco to visit her sister. She treats patients, performs surgery, delivers babies and fights off Indian attacks. All the while, she nurtures and teaches those around her.
I will admit that my first reaction to looking at this book was that it was a shallow romance novel. It captured my attention though and, for the most part, I enjoyed it. Filled with some romance and some drama, this is Christian fiction and somewhat preachy in that Breanna is forever teaching and bringing others to find Christ. It's also enthralling and enjoyable.
Set in the nineteenth century frontier, I found the historical aspect fascinating, especially Breanna's explanations of the history and evolution of medicine, as well as the biblical references to healing.
I like Breanna, although I think she's much too perfect and good. She has no flaws or faults, and always says the right thing and does the right thing.
This is the first of the Angel of Mercy series, but not the first time Breanna has appeared in an Al Lacy book. She and John Stranger appeared in at least one other series. This series is meant to stand alone however, with a brief history given at the beginning. I haven't read any of the other series' yet, but I assume that the characters, especially John Stranger, would seem more personal and developed if one was already familiar with them.
I believe my library has most of these other books and I look forward to checking them out and finding out more about Breanna and John.
This first book of a series about a nurse in the late 1800s is great. It intertwines with the Stranger series, by Al Lacy, as Breanna eventually marries the stranger. This series is full of adventure in the old West, details of medical emergencies, Indians and desperadoes with a Christian twist.
Well, I have to say ... anything by Al Lacy is great !
I have read all of this series--very enjoyable. I would
also suggest anyone who enjoyed this series to read the
"Hannah of Fort Bridger" -- just wonderful. I have even
gotten my two teenaged daughters reading Al lacy books.
Packed with historical facts so vivid you felt like you were there. This is a great series, and I truly enjoyed it.
I have this book as well. Love it.I have the whole series. Al Lacy is a wonderful christian author.
