n Linda Lael Miller's third book of her Big Sky Series we see again just why it is that she is considered one of the absolute best at the western romances. Sending us back to Parable Montana and the lives and loves of it's citizens.Sheriff Boone Miller, all around smexy man with a wounded soul. Boone has spent the past few years grieving for his deceased wife. Letting his sister care for his small sons and doing everything he can to just get by. While he has friends who support him and a community that believes in him, he remains in an eternal funk. Until the sexy chicken rancher (yes it really is a chicken ranch) next door starts to change his life.
After a painful divorce that left her devastated Tara Kendall, leaves New York and purchases a ranch in Parable MT.. A chic chicken rancher to be sure. Bruised and Battered from the endless idiocies of her ex and grieving herself because she had no choice but to give up her step-daughters that she had all but raised from toddlership.. she has found her place, some wonderful friends and a great life.. well except for that redneck Sheriff Boone who lives just across the river in the eyesore of a trailer..
When Boone's brother in law suffers and accident and his sister can no longer care for the boys.. and Tara's megomaniac ex husband decides to ship his daughters off to Tara for the summer, life gets really interesting. Boone and Tara find that they have more in common than they think. And one day magic happens..
This was not a earthshattering, heartpounding, bodice ripping romance.. not thunderstorms.. rather a gentle rain that soaks into the reader leaving them smiling and wanting more. Boone and Tara are endearing, they are human and they make human mistakes.. as well as enjoy human triumphs. The demons they must face are those so many of us do, a rat bastard ex husband, the loss of true love.. they persevere in the face of life's adversities.. until one day they discover that they have come through triumphant!
What was rather interesting to me was that in this book Ms Miller, didn't spend a lot of time in Parable.. Oh sure we see a few of our favorite characters as they pertain to the story but the community as a whole takes a huge step backward in this book. Which was wonderful because it makes Tara and Boone's story that much more poignant..
I enjoyed this book immensely and I most definitely recommend it.. of course it made me dream just a bit.. I mean who doesn't want a brooding, sexy cowboy to come into their lives?

I waited a long time for this book and felt a bit let down. I expected so much more for this character and his love interest Tara. I didn't feel that they were given time in the book to know each other, create conflicts or solve them. They made love for the first time (rather suddenly) and the readers were not given follow-up dialogue between the characters after this monumental event. LLM made reference to Boone calling Tara the next day to talk. There was just too much "explaining" on LLM's part. As a consumers, I wanted to read for myself. This was a critical piece I felt was missing. We needed a lot more sexual tension before the sex took place. Also, we didn't really get to see Tara "give it to James" the jerk. Tara mentioned that James signed a temporary custody agreement for the twins. This would have been a great area for good dialogue, especially with Maggie, the lawyer getting involved. I would picture James fighting Tara, trying to get her to see things his way, Tara would grow a spine, where the twins are concerned and force her hand with the custody by getting Maggie involved. I would have also liked to see more bonding between Boone and the twins as well as Tara and Boone's boys. We know boone's boys like Tara and want her as a mom, but, the response from pre-teens would/should be different. I felt as though there was a rush to finish this book, so much so that character development was not made a priority. The possibility was there for Boone to really shine, as he presented as such a stong, sexy confident man. I hope we get a chance to read a lot more about them When LLM writes Casey's story.
This was the most touching and heart-wrenching of the series so far. Sheriff Boone Taylor is such a sympathetic character that you want everything good to come his way and just make everything better. Miller works hard to make this happen for him in this book. Boone has a lot he's been dealing with - and not in the best way. When his wife died, he sent his young children to stay with family until he got his stuff together - but a few years later and they haven't come home yet. He misses them, but doesn't think he's good enough to take care of them. Fate takes that decision out of his hands, and places them firmly back in his life to stay and watching them get to know each other again was amazing. Boone is a great dad, he just needed to be reminded of that by his sons.
Tara is Boone's neighbor and chicken farmer - sort of. She's wanting to live life less hectic after coming out of a messy marriage and living large in the big city. Tara has some of her own baggage to deal with as well, but since she hasn't told anyone yet before this book - I don't want to give it away. It's a little surprising. Tara and Boone take an instant dislike to each other and this becomes a classic case of opposites attract.
Tara is convinced Boone is a lazy good-for-nothing man, but she doesn't realize he just needs a little help to deal with what life has thrown his way. Boone thinks it's hilarious that this "city girl" thinks she can hack it out in a farm on Montana and just tries to avoid her. But avoiding people isn't really possible in a small town - and when the locals gang up on them to try and get them together, they never stand a chance.
There is a small bit of action in this one, a little tragedy, and a lot of hope. Miller did a much better job with the intro of this one, and I didn't start with a feeling of being lost. There are tons of ups and downs and the set up for book four is great. This is a really fun series, but remember this is Parable, and their lives are lived just a little slower and more laid back than in the city. Lots of things happen, you just don't always realize it until the book is done.
